The Bride's Farewell was originally published in hardback in September 2009 and the paperback edition came out in June 2010. It has gathered good reviews and enthusiastic fans. Very accessible for the 11+ and of direct interest to the 13+.
Synopsis
Living in rural England during the 1850s, Pell sees a future ahead like her mother's of marital unhappiness, grinding domestic drudgery and relentless childbearing.

Her flight, with her mute youngest sibling, from this fate, takes her to Salisbury Horse Fair, where she is tricked out of her beloved horse and her brother vanishes. Searching for them she encounters a mysterious gypsy woman whose life is inextricably linked with hers and discovers her own future.

A gripping, poetic coming-of-age tale, which considers issues as relevant to 21st century teenage experience as they were in Pell's time: relationships, duty, love and abuse. Those who know Tess of the D'urbevilles will recognise similarities, while those who haven't yet encountered it would certainly also enjoy Hardy's novel.

Meg Rosoff won the Guardian Children's Ficition Prize 2004 and the 2005 Bransford Boase Award with How I Live Now.

School Library Association launches SLA Standards for Secondary School Libraries

The School Library Association (SLA) celebrated a sell out weekend course at Wyboston Lakes Conference Centre with the launch of the SLA Standards for Secondary School Libraries. The SLA Standards for Secondary School Libraries are a statement of the right level of provision for school libraries serving secondary age pupils. Duncan Wright, School Librarian of the Year 2010, said ‘this is just what school librarians need – these standards say it all’.

CHAOS" REIGNS PATRICK NESS WINS 2011 CILIP CARNEGIE MEDAL

The 2011 CILIP Carnegie Medal 2011 has been awarded to Patrick Ness for his novel,Monsters of Men.

Monsters of Men is the third and final instalment in Ness's "Chaos Walking" trilogy which compellingly charts the epic power struggles between the inhabitants of a world where all thoughts are audible; and the relationship which develops between Todd and Viola, his young main characters. The two previous books in the trilogy, The Knife of Never Letting Go and The Ask and the Answer were also shortlisted for the CILIP Carnegie Medal, in 2009 and 2010 respectively, the first time this has been achieved by all books in a series.

Ferelith Hordon, chair of the 2011 judging panel comments:

"By any stretch of the imagination – and this is a book which profoundly stretches exactly that – Monsters of Menis an extraordinary achievement.
